Acute Pain Service
The Acute Pain Service (APS) is a specialized inter-professional team that uses a patient-centred model of care that provides evidence-based pain and symptom management to postoperative inpatients. The APS team collaborates with all surgical services to develop comprehensive and individualized care plans that maximizes our patient’s comfort, satisfaction and recovery.
The APS team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is comprised of anesthetists, nurse practitioners, and a clinical nurse specialist. We offer a wide range of treatments to help patients manage their pain and symptoms such as patient-controlled analgesia, epidural infusions or regional blocks and multi-modal analgesia. Through discussion with patients, members of the APS team helps to determine the most effective pain management plan.
The APS team is also engaged in research and education to generate and implement best practices in pain and symptom management throughout Humber River. Services also include pain related education for staff, patients and families, and guideline and knowledge development for all healthcare professionals.
