Maternal Services

Maternal services are provided by a team of staff and physicians recognized for their excellence in practice and teaching. Support from an award-winning general surgery team, our 24-hour in-hospital paediatric and anaesthesia service, and one of the most technologically-advanced diagnostic imaging programs in Ontario is just steps away, if needed. Many of our obstetricians have specialized training in various subspecialties, including:

  • Maternal Fetal Medicine
  • Reproductive Endocrinology
  • Uro-Gynecology
  • Minimal Invasive Gynecology surgery

We provide a full range of services to help mothers and families welcome their new baby.

Prenatal Clinic


This clinic serves women who are at risk, moderate risk or high risk for pregnancy complications. Close monitoring is provided from 20 weeks gestation as needed. Other prenatal services offered are:

  • Non-stress testing to provide close monitoring of your baby’s heart rate.
  • Diabetes in pregnancy monitoring provides diabetes education and regular blood sugar checks.
  • Breastfeeding preparation education to support successful breastfeeding.
  • Prenatal orientation tours for expectant parents and partners.

Prenatal classes are currently not provided at Humber River Hospital, however, we recommend prenatal classes for all parents. The classes help you prepare for the birth of your baby. You also learn to care for yourself and your baby after birth. If you live in Toronto, Public Health offers free online prenatal and postnatal information. Labour and Birthing Unit


Labour Delivery Room
  • We have six Obstetrical Assessment rooms for Labour Triage, and there are fifteen ultramodern, comfortable, private Birthing Rooms – a mix of both LBR. (Labour/Birth/Recovery) and LBRP (Labour/Birth/Recovery/Post-partum) rooms. We also have three Caesarean Section Operative Delivery Rooms.
  • Before leaving the Birthing Unit an Infant Security Protection Tag is placed on each baby’s ankle.
  • A hydrotherapy tub is available for those mothers wishing to use water therapy during labour.
  • After the birth of your baby you will remain in the Birthing Unit for one to two hours. We highly recommend you or your partner do ‘Skin to Skin’ contact by holding your baby on your chest to support transition bonding and frequent breast feeding.

Mother and Baby Unit

  • We have fifty-two single inpatient postpartum rooms which ensures maximum comfort for mother and baby post-delivery. Each room has a private washroom, and sleeping accommodations for partner or family member to stay over if mom wishes.
  • The length of stay is usually 24-36 hours for uncomplicated vaginal birth and 48-72 hours for normal caesarean section delivery.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

NICUThe Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides specialized care to the newborns as young as 30 weeks gestation who are at risk such as prematurity, respiratory or other medical complications. The NICU is equipped and staffed to care for babies requiring ventilator support, oxygen therapy and phototherapy and specialized feeding to support growth. The NICU has 20 private rooms with isolettes so parents can stay with their babies and families can visit. There are two ‘Courtesy’ and one ‘Care by Parent’ rooms for mothers who babies must stay in the NICU after she is discharged. These comfortable rooms help facilitate bonding and some hands-on care 24 - 48 hours prior to baby’s discharge. There is also a 24 hour family lounge available.

Postnatal Services

Humber River offers a number of clinics and consultation services to help new mothers learn how to care for their babies.

  • Breastfeeding Support – our trained Lactation Consultants provides counselling and helps with breastfeeding issues while you are in the hospital or after discharge through our clinic. The clinic is located in the Maternal and Child Department on the east side of the 4th floor from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Please call 416 242-1000 ext. 21450 to make an appointment.
  • Newborn Hearing Screening Program: All babies receive a hearing screening test before discharge to ensure that there are no hearing problems.
  • Post-delivery follow up as required.

Early Pregnancy Clinic

The goal of the clinic is to provide urgent and sensitive care to women under 20 weeks gestation who are experiencing complications of pregnancy and require follow up by an obstetrician. A registered nurse and a social worker are available to provide support and counselling. They can also make referrals to appropriate community resources. We also have multi-faith chaplains to provide spiritual counselling and support. There is also a quiet room/ chapel in the hospital for patients and family use.

The clinic is held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.
