The Obstetrics Birthing Unit team at Humber River Health is here to support you through your labour and delivery. Our expert and multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals are dedicated to providing you with the best care possible. Annually we deliver over 4000 babies, and we are a regional leader in women’s and children’s health care.

Our Obstetrics unit has private rooms that are designed to be comforting and welcoming for you and your support person. Our expert teams use best practices to ensure that we are providing you with safe and quality care. For your birthing experience, there are options for Midwifery Services and Obstetrical care.

What should I expect when I go to Triage?

When you arrive at the Maternal & Child Unit on Level 4, you will first be assessed in our triage room to determine if you are in labour and a decision will be made as to whether or not you should stay or go home. An experienced obstetrical nurse or your midwife will perform the initial assessment and answer your questions and concerns. The on-call obstetrician will also assess you and determine if you are in labour and should be admitted to the hospital. We have obstetricians available 24/7. The nurse will ask you questions related to your pregnancy and your present condition. Your physical assessment will include your vital signs and listening to your baby’s heart rate. If needed, an internal examination may be performed.

How long will I be in the hospital after giving birth?

For the first 1-2 hours after birth, you’ll remain in the labour & birthing unit. This is so you can have a few hours to relax and hold your baby. We recommend you and your partner hold your baby on your chest. Skin-to-skin contact supports bonding and frequent breastfeeding. You’ll spend the rest of your hospital stay in the mother & baby unit. Each room has sleeping accommodations for your partner or a family member to stay overnight. The average length of stay after giving birth is 24-48 hours.
