Black History Month with Humber’s Volunteers

By Humber River Health

The volunteers at Humber River Health (Humber) are an integral part of the organization, making a positive difference in the lives of our diverse staff, physicians, patients, and visitors. This Black History Month, some of Humber’s volunteers have shared their thoughts on what fostering diversity and celebrating Black history and culture means to them.

Festus: Black History Month is important to me because it creates room for people to understand and recognize the struggles and sacrifices of Black slaves, settlers, and professionals who have contributed to the accomplishments and added value to the improvement of our current society.

Jaidyn: To me, Black History Month is about celebrating the accomplishments and reflecting on the hardships experienced by Black individuals to get to where we are today. Black History Month also provides a time to celebrate diversity, giving Black individuals an opportunity to express themselves as well as their culture.

Michelle: To me, Black History Month means recognizing Black excellence. This includes acknowledging and reflecting on the Black trailblazers who made it possible for people of colour to be where they are today, through the advances and achievements they have made in the past and present.
