People Helping People: Why We Do It

By Chiara Marcello

At Humber River Health, every person plays a pivotal role in working to deliver safe and compassionate healthcare in our community. Each person plays a role in managing the workflow and maximizing efficiency within our Hospital. Each person plays a role in providing fundamental services and high-quality care to our patients. Each person plays a role in helping people.

This World Humanitarian Day, we celebrate people helping people worldwide. Starting within our own communities, each of us plays a part in creating a safe and healthy place to call home. Despite obstacles or unforeseen challenges, the physicians, staff, and volunteers at Humber continuously display their commitment to excellence in helping our patients and each other.

Why Karuna does it.

Karuna Goela is a physiotherapist at Humber. Karuna works to help others because she believes we can make our world a better place simply by helping others in the most vulnerable moments of their lives. “It is such a content and rewarding feeling when you know you have made such a positive impact on your patients and their families,” says Karuna. Karuna believes that  “people helping people” with compassion, professionalism, and respect is the ultimate form of humanitarianism.

Why Bobee does it.

Bobee Kuriakose is a registered nurse in Humber’s hemodialysis unit. Bobee works to help others because of the satisfaction she receives from serving her patients and tending to their needs. Bobee’s top priority is patient safety and aims to make her patients feel better and more comfortable during their time in the hospital.

Why Angie does it.

Angie Reid is a clerical associate in Humber’s cancer care clinic. Angie works to help others by ensuring she is putting the patients first. She feels a sense of gratification and satisfaction when she is able to do what she can to help those in need.

Thank you to our healthcare heroes for continuously showing us the value of people helping people. This World Humanitarian Day, take time to remind yourself of the importance of helping others. Small acts of kindness and simple gestures can lead to much larger positive outcomes both in our communities and worldwide.
