Patient POV: The Falls Prevention Program

By Humber River Health

The Falls Prevention Program at Humber River Health is an evidence-based program to improve the safety of seniors. The program encompasses a consultation with a geriatrician, a falls assessment by a physiotherapist, as well as group and home exercise programs. Since its launch, the program has received an abundance of positive feedback from both patients and their families.

Below are stories from a few patients who have recently participated in the program.

Judith

Judith heard about the Falls Prevention Program through her physician.

During her time in the program, Judith noticed improvements in the strength of her arms and legs. She also found the educational components of the program to be very useful. “The fact that we are given printouts of everything,” explains Judith, “is particularly helpful because our memory isn’t always what you want it to be. When I need information about something in particular, it is nice to have a reference.”

During her time in the program, Judith found the individual attention to be very helpful. “Everyone is very careful and remains close by if I’m on the treadmill, so I have no fear of falling or injuring myself.”

Francesco

Francesco and his daughter heard about the program through their online research and discussed it with their family physician, who then referred Francesco.

According to his daughter, Francesco has developed healthy habits through his exercise routines. These habits ensure he stays mobile and active, which improves his overall lifestyle.

During his time in the program, Francesco found the exercises to be most enjoyable, specifically the cycling. “Everyone is also very kind and helpful,” he explains.

Alina

Alina’s physician recommend the Falls Prevention Program after Alina discussed her troublesome experiences related to her back and balance.

During her time in the program, Alina had a positive experience participating in the exercise and educational activities. “I’ve really enjoyed it,” said Alina, “and I will be thanking my physician too.”

Alex

Alex heard about the program after being admitted to the Hospital, in which he was then referred.

During his time in the program, Alex learned a lot of exercises and information that have helped him move in the right direction in terms of his balance, strength, and mobility.
