Jenice Lewis is a Clinical Practice Leader (CPL) for the Renal Dialysis Unit at Humber River Health and has been with the organization for nine years. This Black History Month, Jenice shared her thoughts on what it means to celebrate Black history and culture, and the importance of recognizing diversity in our healthcare settings.

How do you celebrate Black History Month (BHM)? Why is it important to you?

Each year I celebrate Black History Month by reminding myself of the accomplishments and sacrifices made by our ancestors. I also remind my children and grandson of the sacrifices others have made to provide us with opportunities we may not have if it was not for their fight for equality.

Celebrating Black History is important because it recognizes and honors the significant contributions, achievements, and struggles of Black individuals throughout history. It helps to highlight the often overlooked or marginalized stories and voices, promoting a more inclusive and accurate understanding of our shared history. By celebrating Black history, we can foster a greater sense of unity, respect, and appreciation for the diverse experiences and cultures that make up our society.

How do you demonstrate leadership in your day-to-day work?

Working as a CPL, I have had the pleasure of working alongside hardworking and dedicated staff. My work ethics is demonstrating professionalism and teamwork. I firmly believe that we should share our knowledge and promote quality care that benefits our patients.

What advice would you give to young Black professionals aspiring to pursue a career in healthcare?

To all young Black individuals who are aspiring to join the healthcare industry, I say build a strong foundation of networks where you feel fully supported. It is a very rewarding experience and I am very proud to be apart of it.
