When Gabby first joined the Outpatient Psychosis Day Treatment Program (DTP) at Humber River Health (Humber) in May 2025, she was not sure what to expect. With a history of schizophrenia and living with social and generalized anxiety, Gabby often found it difficult to step into new situation– especially those that involved meeting new people.

“I was really nervous in the beginning,” she admits. “But I also knew I wanted to challenge myself and take steps toward feeling better. Coming to the program was one of those steps.”

Since then, Gabby’s story has become one of courage, growth, and resilience. An example how Humber’s Day Treatment Program helps patients build their skills and confidence.

A Supportive Space for Recovery

The Outpatient Psychosis Day Treatment Program offers a structured, therapeutic setting for adults living with mental health conditions such as psychosis, anxiety, or mood disorders. Participants like Gabby attend several days a week, where they take part in group therapy, education, and skill-building sessions designed to support recovery and independence.

When asked about how the program helped her, the immediate response was the people.

“It’s the most support I’ve ever felt,” she says. “The doctors, the nurses, everyone is so patient, so understanding, and they really listen. Everyone here genuinely cares about you and wants you to succeed.”

Learning Skills for Life

Over the past few months, Gabby has learned a wide range of tools that have helped her navigate life with much vigor.

“I’ve learned coping skills, life skills, mindfulness, health matters, and social skills,” she says proudly. “Before, I struggled with managing my thoughts, but now I have real and effective strategies that help.”

Each day in the program focuses on building resilience through self-awareness and practical tools. This can go from managing stress and improving communication to developing healthier daily routines.

Taking Steps— Literally

In August, Gabby took part in the program’s Walking Challenge, a friendly initiative encouraging participants to stay active and prioritize self-care. Gabby didn’t just participate— she won, averaging between 10,000 and 20,000 steps a day! With a whopping total of more than 400,000 steps in three weeks.

“Taking a few small steps helps” she says, “It’s become part of how I take care of myself. It’s time for me to feel good about how far I’ve come.”

Looking Ahead with Confidence

As Gabby prepares to graduate from the program at the end of October, she’s filled with gratitude for the support she’s received.

“Take full advantage of this support.” she says. “It makes you appreciate your mental health more. “I feel less timid, happier, and more confident.

Her journey shows that with the right support, structure, and encouragement, recovery is not just possible. It’s powerful.
