Safer Steps Ahead: Humber River Health’s Approach to Fall Prevention

By Humber River Health

In the Healthy Living Clinic at Humber River Health (Humber), seniors are empowered to maintain independence, build strength, and continue living safely through a comprehensive range of services. The clinic’s interdisciplinary team, which includes geriatricians, registered nurses, clerical associates, dietitians, social workers, physiotherapists, and physiotherapist assistants, all work together to assess and support seniors facing a variety of age-related concerns such as changes in mobility, incidents of falls, and cognitive issues that increase medical needs.

One of the clinic’s most important services is the Falls Prevention Program which offers a comprehensive approach to keeping seniors safe, including a consultation with a geriatrician, a detailed falls risk assessment by a physiotherapist, a group exercise program, and a home-based exercise plan. These programs work hand-in-hand to improve mobility, enhance safety, and increase overall confidence.

When Domenico joined the Falls Prevention Program, he had just begun experiencing changes in his mobility. Once a very active man in his younger years, he missed the feeling of moving with confidence and energy. Now in his third week, his progress is already clear. “The exercises make me feel strong again,” Domenico shares. “I can really feel the difference in my legs.”

The program focuses heavily on exercises designed to improve mobility, stability, and balance which are all essential in preventing falls. One of Domenico’s favourite exercises is bicycle training, bringing him back to the days when he used to ride a real bike.

Domenico’s experience reflects one of the program’s core goals: helping seniors regain strength and reduce the risk of falls.

While Domenico is just beginning his journey, Maria is nearing the end of her time in the Falls Prevention Program — and the results have been life-changing.

Living with osteoporosis, Maria entered the program with fear around falling and the potential injuries that could follow. She mentioned that having brittle bones made her a little bit wary of the exercises she can complete. But week after week, she found herself growing stronger, steadier, and more confident. “This program helped me tremendously,” Maria says. “I’ve built so much strength, and I even use the exercises at home.”

Maria and Domenico’s stories highlight the specialized care of Humber’s Falls Prevention Program. It showcases the best quality of care for seniors across our community— ensuring they age with strength, dignity, and confidence.
