Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future

By Humber River Health

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, in its 2015 report, defined reconciliation as follows:

“… Reconciliation is about establishing and maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Aboriginal and non-aboriginal peoples in this country. In order for that to happen, there has to be awareness of the past, an acknowledgement of the harm that has been inflicted, atonement for the causes, and action to change behaviour.”

On this day that celebrates Indigenous People in our Country, I urge everyone to take a moment to think about what reconciliation means to them and what part today’s celebration plays in that reconciliation.
