Humber River Health Wins Queen’s University Regional Education Team Award

By Shahana Gaur

The Internal Medicine Teaching Group at Humber River Health has won the Queen’s University Regional Education Team Award. This award recognizes groups involved in the advancement of medical education in community sites. The Regional Education Awards highlight excellence in teaching, mentorship and education development. We asked Dr. Andrew Duncan, an internist here at Humber, about our talented Internal Medicine team and their educational work.

As the education lead at Humber, Dr. Duncan helps to organize teaching, rotation structure and scheduling for residents and clerks visiting from other universities. Humber has a dedicated teaching unit on 8 West that he oversees. He also coordinates electives for visiting clerks and residents from other universities.

“We have a very dedicated group of general internists who do hands-on learning with rotators on our clinical teaching unit on 8 West. They work with both clerks and residents, while balancing a busy ward. There is bedside teaching, dedicated didactic teaching, and informal teaching around clinical cases, which has been well received by the learners. We also have learners spend some time in the ER to complete some admissions to hospital, so they can experience the full spectrum of patient care. The sub-specialist group also help with teaching sessions weekly and this has been highlighted as a strength of our program. The sub-specialist teaching scheduling is managed by Dr. Fishbein, who has been a tremendous champion of our medical education program.”
